IMMIGRATION NEWS
Have you asked yourself, what would have happened if the occurrence at the house of Professor Henry Gates in Massachusetts would have happened to an undocumented immigrant who does not speak English?
The Professor of Harvard University and friend of President Obama, was at his house when a police officer knocked on his door, interrogated him, handcuffed him like a criminal, questioning his identity and the reason why he was in his own house. This incident, with the African American Citizen and Professor, is an example of what happens in the United States to immigrants when their rights are violated because of racial profiling.
A study, from Cardozo University, analyzed reports which contained information about the raids and arrests conducted by immigration that had been made on private properties in the metropolitan areas. This report confirms that in the 86% of arrests made in Long Island-NY, none of them had an existing judicial order placed to raid a property or arrest anyone. Of those arrested, 94% of the immigrants were Latinos. The same happened in New Jersey, where in the 25% arrested, 87% were Hispanic.
The previous examples, sum up the increasing anti-immigrant perception which is supported by one in three congressmen in Washington, (108 Republicans and 49 Democrats) who are in favor of enacting the proposed law known as SAVE, the “Act to Protect America through Verification and Execution of the Immigration Laws”. This gives us reason to worry about what the new and much awaited Immigration Act will consist of.
